Real time Data Vault in Healthcare

Hospital clinicians and administrators are starved of data. What data they do get it is typically stale and usually unrecognisable, leading to low trust. Hospitals generate vast amounts of data yet so little is leveraged outside of the systems that created it. Clinicians are highly dedicated scientists, always seeking to improve patient outcomes through research, but research needs to be fed with data. Administrators need to anticipate the future, and manage the present, not explain what happened last month, or more commonly, the month before.

There is a rich vein of information flowing between all of the hospital systems that allow them all to interoperate. These are the HL7 based integrations, an event based protocol in which each event is wrapped in rich contextual information. This presentation will outline the HL7 data vault warehouse, the architecture and strategies followed and the benefits that are being derived from it.

  • Why healthcare data warehousing is hard and why it’s needed.
  • A brief introduction to HL7
  • The good, the bad and the ugly of HL7
  • Why build a data vault from HL7
  • Some Data Vault challenges and choices when using HL7
  • Patient Identify Management in healthcare using Data Vault
