Maintaining and processing historical data has become not just a goal but a reality for many organizations. As a consequence, the ability to deal properly with the time dimension in databases has become an important practical problem. In fact, today’s mainstream DBMS products already include features that are specifically designed to help with this important requirement; unfortunately, however, the support found in those products falls a long way short of the theoretical ideal. This seminar introduces and describes that theoretical ideal in detail.
