Dan Linstedt
Dan Linstedt is an American data architect, thought leader, educator and the inventor of the Data Vault methodology, a full scale solution for enterprise analytics. Widely recognized in the data-warehousing and business-intelligence community, his work has shaped modern approaches to enterprise data integration, historisation, and analytics.
Early Career & Education
Linstedt holds a Bachelor of Science in Computer Science from California State University, Chico.
Early in his career he engaged in the design and architecture of transactional and analytical systems across federal-government and commercial enterprises, giving him first-hand experience in large-scale data challenges.
Invention of Data Vault
In the 1990s, Linstedt developed what became the Data Vault modelling method, later publishing a full scale approach (including methodology, modeling, and architecture) in the early 2000s.
The Data Vault model is designed for long-term historical storage of data from multiple operational sources, emphasizing features such as auditability, traceability, and agility in evolving business environments.
He emphasized that rather than pursuing a “single version of the truth,” the method captures “all the data, all of the time,” or better said: A single version of the facts for a point in time, thereby preserving upstream source data and enabling flexible downstream interpretation.
Further Developments & Thought Leadership
In addition to the original Data Vault method, Linstedt introduced the broader “Data Vault 2.0” methodology, which incorporates not just modelling but also architecture, process design, ETL/ELT best practices, performance tuning and enterprise governance. Wikipedia+1
He has authored and co-authored several influential books and articles on the subject, and has served as a presenter, trainer and consultant around the world.
Leadership & Enterprise Roles
Linstedt is the founder or co-founder of several organisations focused on Data Vault and data architecture, including DataVaultAlliance Holdings LLC and Scalefree (a data-consulting firm).
He continues to oversee, guide and certify implementations of Data Vault methodology globally, working with organisations to ensure rigorous, scalable practices.
Why His Work Matters
- The Data Vault method addresses a core challenge in enterprise data warehousing: coping with evolving business systems, changing requirements, and the need for audit/historical traceability.
- By separating structural elements (business keys) from changing descriptive attributes and maintaining full load history, the approach supports long-term scalability and adaptability.
- His emphasis on methodology, architecture and governance (Data Vault 2.0) helps organisations bridge from merely modelling to full lifecycle, enterprise-ready data warehousing.
- Given his hands-on experience and thought-leadership, Linstedt continues to influence how data professionals approach integration, analytics, and data-platform design.
Key Publications & Contributions
- He authored the “Data Vault Series” of articles in The Data Administration Newsletter starting in 2002, detailing the method’s core components.
- His books such as Super Charge Your Data Warehouse: Invaluable Data Modeling Rules to Implement Your Data Vault and Building a Scalable Data Warehouse with Data Vault 2.0 are widely used in the industry.
A Brief Personal Note
Linstedt’s career reflects an engineer’s mindset—pragmatic, results-oriented, focused on solving real business and technical problems. His willingness to challenge conventional data-warehouse norms (e.g., the “single version of the truth”) and develop an architecture that supports change and complexity has earned him considerable respect.
